Revisiting Saucony: A Podiatrist's Review of the Ride 19 Running Shoe

Every once in a while, life turns you into a time traveler.

Maybe it's hearing that slow jam you and your college roommates played every Friday night, catching a glimpse of the threadbare sweatshirt you just can't bring yourself to throw away, or passing the turn that leads to that neighborhood Italian restaurant where the breadsticks were always warm and your favorite booth was almost guaranteed to be open.

Revisiting old favorites can be surprisingly fun. Sometimes you find yourself wondering why you ever moved on. Other times, you discover things aren't quite the way you remembered them.

As both a podiatrist and a runner, I have those same moments with running shoes.

There are brands I wore faithfully for years before gradually moving on as new models and technologies caught my attention.

Saucony is one of them. I used to lace up a pair regularly, but somewhere along the way, I stopped reaching for them. Not because they let me down—I was simply busy exploring everything else the running shoe world had to offer.

So, when it was time for a new pair of running shoes, revisiting Saucony felt like the perfect opportunity to see how one of its most popular models has evolved over the years.

A Fresh Look at a Familiar Brand

Founded along the banks of Saucony Creek in Pennsylvania in 1898, Saucony has spent more than a century earning the trust of runners around the world. While plenty of running shoe brands have come and gone in that time, Saucony has remained focused on helping runners move comfortably, perform their best, and enjoy every mile along the way.

One of the things I've always appreciated about Saucony is that the company doesn't seem interested in chasing every trend. Instead, it continues refining its core lineup, improving trusted favorites while staying committed to innovation, performance, and the overall running experience.

The Ride lineup is a great example of that philosophy. Now in its nineteenth iteration, it's become one of Saucony's flagship neutral running shoes, designed to deliver reliable comfort for everything from easy neighborhood runs and marathon training to walking, traveling, and everyday wear.

That's what made me curious to revisit it.

While I'd been busy trying other brands over the years, Saucony quietly continued improving one of the shoes that helped build its reputation.

I was curious to see what had changed and whether the Ride 19 still deserved a place in the conversation among today's top daily trainers.

What Makes the Ride 19 Stand Out?

At first glance, the Saucony Ride 19 may not be the flashiest running shoe on the market, and honestly, I don't think it's trying to be.

Instead of chasing bold designs or dramatic features, Saucony focuses more on refining the fundamentals that matter most to runners: comfort, consistency, and versatility.

One of the biggest updates is the shoe's PWRRUN+ midsole cushioning, which provides a softer, more responsive feel than previous versions while still maintaining the balanced support many runners appreciate.

Rather than leaning into maximum cushioning, the Ride 19 is designed to deliver a smooth, efficient ride with balanced comfort and support.

Another standout feature is its updated geometry.

The shoe encourages smooth heel-to-toe transitions, helping runners move naturally through each stride.

Combined with a breathable engineered mesh upper and a slightly wider, more stable platform, the Ride 19 is made to feel comfortable right out of the box while providing enough support for everyday miles.

I also appreciate that the Ride 19 doesn't try to be everything to everyone.

It's a neutral running shoe, making it a good fit for many runners whose feet don't need extra stability or motion-control features.

This is also why I always encourage my patients and fellow runners to look beyond the hype. The shoe that works beautifully for someone else may not be the right match for your feet, your gait, or the miles you plan to put in.

What Runners and Foot Experts Are Saying

I'm always interested to see whether my impressions line up with what other runners and footwear professionals have experienced with each Footwear Focus style I feature.

Reviewing what folks are saying online, I found the Ride 19 earns praise as a dependable daily trainer that prioritizes comfort over flash.

  • Many reviewers describe it as a versatile daily trainer that's well suited for everything from easy training runs and long walks to marathon preparation.

  • Experts also note that this latest version offers a slightly softer ride and a wider, more stable platform than previous Ride models.

  • Many runners appreciate these updates, saying they make the shoe feel good over longer distances while maintaining a smooth, balanced transition with each step.

Of course, no running shoe is perfect.

  • Some longtime Saucony fans say the Ride 19 feels a little less energetic than earlier versions, especially if they're used to a firmer or more responsive ride.

Even so, comfort, versatility, and smooth transitions consistently emerge as some of the Ride 19's most frequently praised qualities.

My Review of the Saucony Ride 19 Running Shoe

After spending some time and logging some miles in my Ride 19s, I came away with a positive impression.

The first thing I noticed was the cushioning. They have plenty of it, but it doesn't feel overdone.

Some of today's running shoes have so much cushioning that they sit noticeably higher off the ground. If you  prefer the maximum-cushioned feel, Saucony has other models that offer more of that.

For me, though, the Ride 19 strikes a nice balance, providing plenty of comfort and shock absorption without going overboard.

I also like the shoe’s 8 mm heel-to-toe drop. For me, it feels like a good middle ground—slightly lower than the Brooks Ghost, for example—while still providing a smooth, natural transition through each stride.

I wore these for both walking and running, and they worked well for both activity levels, which is exactly what I look for in a solid everyday running shoe.

I chose the Antique/Wasabi color combo because it's fun without being over the top.

Overall, I'd say the Ride 19 lives up to its reputation as a  solid neutral running shoe. It may not be the buzziest option on the market, but it delivers where it counts.

If you're looking for a comfortable, versatile shoe for running, walking, or everyday wear, I think it's well worth considering.

Who Is the Ride 19 Is Best For?

The Ride 19 is built for everyday miles rather than race-day speed.

  • If you're looking for a reliable shoe for regular training runs, neighborhood walks, travel, or long days on your feet, it offers the kind of versatility many people appreciate.

  • On the other hand, runners looking for an ultralight racing shoe or those who need extra stability or motion-control features may be better served by a different model.

That's why choosing the right running shoe for you isn’t about chasing trends, but about understanding what your feet need and matching your footwear to the way you move.

Beyond the Brand Name

Whether it's Saucony, Brooks, Altra, or another brand entirely, the logo on the side of the shoe is only part of the equation.

The best running shoe is the one that fits your unique feet, complements the way you move, and supports your lifestyle. That's why a shoe your running buddy swears by may not be the best choice for you.

Revisiting Saucony reminded me that great footwear evolves over time, just as runners do. The right shoe should help you move with confidence and ease, whether you're training for your next race, walking around your neighborhood, or simply staying active.

If you're considering the Saucony Ride 19 but still have questions, my team and I can help take the guesswork out of choosing the right running shoe. We'll evaluate your feet, the way you move, and your goals before recommending footwear that's well suited to your lifestyle, activity level, and long-term foot health needs.
