Footwear Focus — A Podiatrist Reviews the Sabah Flats in Fort Worth Brown
I’ve been impatiently waiting for Chicago spring weather to cooperate so I could finally start wearing these shoes more regularly.
If you live here, you already know how unpredictable this time of year can be. One day feels warm and sunny, and the next day you’re digging your boots back out of the closet, wondering why you got your hopes up in the first place.
But during one of those brief stretches of spring weather earlier this year, I picked up a pair of Sabah flats in their popular Fort Worth Brown leather color, and I’ve been looking forward to featuring them in a Footwear Focus post ever since.
These shoes immediately caught my attention because they sit in an interesting middle ground between craftsmanship, comfort, style, and practicality. They’re minimalist without feeling flimsy, stylish without feeling overly trendy, and thoughtfully made in a way that feels increasingly rare in today’s footwear world.
They also open the door to a bigger conversation I often have with my podiatry patients: How do flatter, more minimalist shoes fit into a healthy footwear rotation?
Because not every shoe needs to function like a running sneaker. Different shoes serve different purposes, activities, and support needs.
And that’s exactly what makes this month’s pick worth discussing. So let’s dive right in.
About the Sabah Brand
Sabah is a smaller footwear company known for handcrafted leather shoes inspired by traditional Turkish shoemaking techniques.
Unlike mass-produced flats, Sabah emphasizes craftsmanship, durability, and repairability. Their shoes are handmade in small batches using natural leather designed to soften and mold to your feet over time.
I also appreciate that the company encourages people to care for and continue wearing their shoes rather than constantly replacing them. Their slower, more intentional approach to fashion feels refreshing.
The brand’s overall philosophy centers around versatility, comfort, travel, and everyday living, which makes a lot of sense for the kind of patients I work with every day here in Chicago.
Next, let’s look at the specific style I’m reviewing.
A Closer Look at the Fort Worth Brown Sabah Flats
The Fort Worth Brown Sabah flat is a slip-on leather flat with a relaxed, minimalist silhouette that falls somewhere between a loafer and a traditional flat.
Key features of the style include:
Hand-stitched leather construction
Soft leather upper and lining
Flexible sole
Roomier toe box than many traditional flats
Minimal internal structure and cushioning
One thing that immediately stood out to me about them is the quality of the leather used to craft them.
Unlike many flats made with heavily processed or synthetic materials that can feel stiff or rigid right out of the box, Sabah shoes use natural leather designed to soften and mold to your feet over time.
That said, this is still a fairly minimal shoe overall.
There’s less cushioning and structure here than you’d find in a walking shoe or supportive sneaker, which is important to keep in mind before making them your go-to option for every situation.
Minimalist Flats vs. Supportive Footwear
As I mentioned, this shoe style also sits at an intersection that I believe is important to clarify and discuss.
A lot of people assume shoes fall into one of two categories:
“Healthy” supportive shoes
Stylish shoes that are automatically bad for your feet
In reality, it’s usually much more nuanced than that.
Shoes like these Sabah flats can absolutely have a place in a healthy footwear rotation, especially if:
Your feet tolerate flatter shoes well
You’re not dealing with active pain or injury
You understand what situations they’re best suited for
People often run into problems when they expect a flatter lifestyle shoe to function like an athletic shoe.
If you’re spending all day on hard surfaces, walking miles through the city, exercising, or recovering from issues like plantar fasciitis or tendon pain, your feet may need more support or cushioning than a shoe like this can provide.
This doesn’t mean minimalist flats can’t have a place in your wardrobe. It simply means the best footwear choices are the ones that match both your activity level and your feet’s unique support needs.
What Customers and Podiatrists Have to Say
Online reviews of Sabah’s shoes tend to highlight many of the same themes.
Customers frequently mention their:
Beautiful leather quality
Versatile styling
Comfortable fit once broken in
Lightweight feel for travel and everyday wear
Many people also appreciate that their shoes feel more elevated than a typical flat, while still remaining comfortable and easy to wear casually.
From a podiatric perspective, the strengths and limitations customers call out make a lot of sense.
Softer, more flexible shoes often feel comfortable in moderation, but may not provide enough structure for every foot type or every activity level.
Some people may also benefit from adding inserts if they plan to wear them for longer stretches of walking.

Dr. Young’s Perspective
I really do like these shoes.
Especially in the classic Fort Worth Brown color I opted for, they work well with both jeans and dresses, which makes them feel versatile enough for everything from casual outings to a nicer dinner. They also feel elevated and thoughtfully made without looking overly formal.
The leather across the top is soft and comfortable, and I didn’t notice rubbing there the way I sometimes do with flats.
Sizing these did take a little trial and error for me personally.
I originally ordered a 41 EU because I was worried they might feel too tight, but they ended up being too roomy. I exchanged them for a 40 EU, which fits better, though I honestly think my true size in this style may actually be closer to a 39 EU.
From a support standpoint, I’d call these moderate. The sole feels sturdier than many ballet-style flats, but there’s minimal true arch support built into the shoe itself.
I also realized that if I planned to walk long distances in them, I’d probably want additional support from an insert. And while the exposed stitching inside the sole looks beautiful aesthetically, I could see it becoming irritating against the bottom of your feet during extended wear without socks.
I also think this style may feel too narrow for some people with wider feet.
Overall, though, I’d call these a stylish, thoughtfully made option for someone looking for a more elevated everyday flat.
When This Shoe Makes Sense (and When It Doesn’t)
To sum up what we’ve discussed so far, these Sabah flats can be a great option for:
Casual everyday wear
Work outings or social events
Moderate walking
Travel
People who prefer softer, more flexible shoes
I can especially see these appealing to folks who are looking for a more polished alternative to athletic shoes.
However, if you’re:
Recovering from a foot injury
Managing ongoing foot pain
Spending long days standing on hard surfaces
Or walking very long distances regularly
…You may need something with more structure and support to give your feet what they need and deserve.
I often help my City Step Podiatry patients think through their footwear choices in a practical, realistic way—and I consider it an honor and a pleasure to do so.
Sometimes that means recommending more supportive shoes for certain activities. Other times, it involves discussing inserts, custom orthotics, or simply helping people build a healthier overall shoe rotation.
Because the goal usually isn’t to find one “perfect” shoe.
It’s understanding what your feet need and making thoughtful choices that help keep you comfortable and active long term.
