Footwear Focus — A Podiatrist Reviews Merry People’s Bobbi Rain Boots

When you live in Chicago, you know there’s a very specific stretch of time when winter boots feel like too much, but your everyday sneakers aren’t going to cut it either.

Sidewalks are wet, curbs are questionable, and the weather seems to change its mind halfway through the day.

This is usually when people reach for rain boots, often reluctantly.

If you’ve worn traditional rain boots, you already know the tradeoff—They’ll keep your feet dry, but comfort and support aren’t exactly their strong suit.

As a podiatrist, this is where I tend to have some concerns.

Thankfully, not all rain boots are created equal—and that’s what made me take a closer look at this month’s pick.

I already own a pair of the Merry People Bobbi boots and recently ordered another. So this is one of those cases where I’m not just reviewing a shoe—I’m also wearing it in real life.

Let’s break down what makes these different, why they’ve earned a spot in my personal rotation, and whether they’re a good choice for your feet.

Merry People Brand Overview

Merry People is an Australian footwear brand that set out to rethink what a rain boot could be.

Instead of designing something purely functional, their goal was to create a boot people would actually want to wear day to day—something that works just as well navigating city streets as it does in wet or muddy conditions.

Their Bobbi boot is the clearest expression of this vision.

From a materials standpoint, their boots are made with natural rubber and lined with neoprene—yup, the same material used in wetsuits.

This combination helps keep water out while also making them more flexible and comfortable than the stiff rubber styles most people are used to.

Beyond construction, the brand has also put thought into how their products are made and used over time.

Merry People focuses on durability and long-term wear rather than fast product turnover.

They’ve also taken steps toward more responsible sourcing, including working toward certified natural rubber and reducing unnecessary packaging.

Additionally, the brand emphasizes community giving and partnerships, supporting initiatives that align with environmental responsibility and access.

For people like me, who care not just about how a shoe performs, but how it’s made, this adds another layer of value.

Now, let’s zoom in for a look at their Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot.

A Closer Look at the Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot

The Bobbi is an ankle-height rain boot designed in a Chelsea-style silhouette, which immediately makes them more wearable than traditional tall rain boots.

If you’ve been following along, you know I’m a big fan of a Chelsea-style boot. In fact, I share my deep and abiding love for this style in two blogs you can check out

From a design perspective, here’s a breakdown of what stands out about the Bobbi boot:

  • Waterproof natural rubber exterior

  • Neoprene lining for added comfort and insulation

  • Built-in arch support (which isn’t typical for rain boots)

  • Removable insole for fit adjustments or orthotics

  • Flexible construction with pull tabs for easy on and off

One of the biggest differences with this boot is that they’re designed for regular use.

  • They’re lighter and less rigid than traditional rain boots, and the shorter height makes them easier to pair with everyday outfits without feeling overly bulky.

  • The variety of color options also makes them more of a lifestyle piece than a purely functional one—which, depending on your preferences, can be a big plus.

  • The styling means they read less as traditional rain boots and more like stylish footwear, so they more seamlessly pair with a wider array of outfits.

What Customers and Podiatrists Have to Say

No matter what my perspective is on a footwear style, I always find it valuable to take a look at what other customers and podiatrists have to share about them.

When it comes to feedback from wearers, a few consistent themes come up.

Many people say these boots are:

  • Comfortable right away, without a long break-in period

  • Easy to slip on and off

  • Versatile enough for both casual wear and wet conditions

  • More supportive than expected for a rain boot

From a podiatric perspective, that last point is where this boot stands out from the crowd.

Most rain boots are flat, minimally cushioned, and not designed with foot mechanics in mind. The Bobbi does a better job than most in providing some structure and underfoot support.

That said, it’s still important to keep your expectations realistic.

Even a well-designed rain boot has its limits when it comes to long distances or extended time on your feet.

This is where I see people get into trouble—not because the shoe they’ve chosen is “bad,” but because it’s being used outside of what it’s designed for.

Next, I’ll share my personal thoughts on this style with you.

Dr. Young’s Perspective on the Bobbi Boot

As I mentioned, I already have a pair of the Merry People Bobbi boots—and I liked them enough that I just ordered another in a more neutral color.

That alone probably tells you how often I reach for them.

From both a practical and podiatric standpoint, there’s a lot to like here. They’re supportive for a rain boot, they’re comfortable, and they actually look good, which isn’t always the case with this category.

Most importantly, they do what you need them to do. They keep your feet dry in wet conditions and work really well for everyday use, like commuting or running errands. With the right socks, I’ve also found they can handle colder, wet days. Still they’re not ideal for extreme winter conditions.

One thing I’ve been able to test over time is durability. My first pair is about four years old and still holding up well, which speaks to the overall quality of these boots.

That said, I did notice something once I started wearing them for longer distances that I felt was important to share—

  • My original pair was a size 39 EU (about an 8.5 US), and the fit was fine for everyday use. But when I wanted to walk longer distances in them, I found myself wishing for a little more arch support.

  • So, with my new pair, I sized up to a 40 EU and added an insert. I chose a Superfeet All-Purpose Berry insert for its lower profile and added forefoot cushioning. That combination made a noticeable difference in overall comfort for longer wear.

Be sure to check out my recent review of Superfeet’s orthotic insoles to learn more about this brand.

This personal story also highlights something I always try to emphasize—Even when a shoe is well-designed, small adjustments like sizing or adding an insert can make it work better for your specific needs.

Overall, these are a great option for commuting, being out in the rain, and everyday wear. If you’re planning to walk a long distance in them, I’d recommend adding an insert to give yourself a bit more support.

When These Boots Work Best (and When They Don’t)

In my mind, every Midwesterner needs a good pair of rain boots. The Bobbi Ankle Rain Boot fills this very specific and useful role in your footwear rotation.

They’re a great option for:

  • Rainy commutes

  • Running errands in wet conditions

  • Walking moderate distances

  • Transitional weather, especially in spring and fall

They offer more comfort and support than a traditional rain boot, while still being practical and easy to wear.

Where the Bobbi Boot falls short is in situations that require more structure or shock absorption.

Like when you’re:

  • On your feet all day

  • Walking long distances

  • Exercising or doing higher-impact activities

  • Managing foot pain or recovering from an injury

For these situations, you’ll likely be more comfortable in a more supportive shoe.

I explore this important distinction more deeply in my last Footwear Focus blog, which you can check out here. In it, I share my expert thoughts on the difference between fashion and functional footwear and how to choose the shoes that will give your feet the support they need.

The Bottom Line on the Bobbi Ankle Rain Boots

Rain boots have traditionally been more about function than comfort—they’ve focused on keeping your feet warm and dry, rather than offering support and structure.

The Merry People Bobbi is a strong example of how that’s starting to shift.

It offers a more wearable, comfortable option for everyday wet conditions—and for the right use, it’s a solid addition to your rotation.

But like any shoe, they work best when you understand what they’re designed for and wear them accordingly.

If you’re not sure whether your current footwear is supporting your feet the way it should, or if you’re dealing with discomfort that keeps coming back, it’s worth taking a closer look.

At City Step Podiatry, I help my patients sort through these decisions every day. Whether it’s choosing better footwear, addressing pain, or adding support like custom orthotics, the goal is always the same: helping you stay active, comfortable, and free from unnecessary strain.
